Rates of smoking among adolescent behavioral health patients in Maryland

  • Rates of smoking among MH patients are lower than SUD, with Whites smoking at highest rates statewide.

2012-2017 adolescent smoking rates in behavioral health treatment

  • Graph represents “yes” responses to the question “Do you smoke cigarettes?”
  • Publicly-available data from 2012 forward for mental health treatment recipients
  • Beginning in 2015, data from substance use treatment recipients also became available, which is very important because rates of smoking among SUDs are patients very high.
  • Rate among those receiving MH treatment have dropped consistently over time, whereas rate of smoking among SUD users remains high.

The above data on behavioral health was taken from the Maryland Outcomes Measurement System (OMS) Data Mart which is designed to track adults, children, and adolescents receiving outpatient mental health treatment services in Maryland's Public Mental Health System.
