The Maryland Department of Health announced the 10-year anniversary of the implementation of the Clean Indoor Air Act. On February 1, 2008, nearly all indoor workplaces and public spaces, including bars and restaurants, became smoke-free.

E-cigarette use has become more widespread in recent years. Research has only just begun to explore the potential health effects of e-cigarette use and its efficacy as a cessation tool.

Scholars suggest that smoking is currently one of the most critical issues for the LGBT population. Approximately 30,000 people in the US LGBT population die from tobacco related illnesses every year.
