Studies Show Youth E-Cigarette Use is on the Rise

September

The rise of electronic cigarettes has prompted researchers to assess its impacts as a gateway to tobacco use.  A recently published study by the CDC reports that youth e-cigarette use is on the rise, as seen in the doubling of the percentage of U.S. middle and high school students who reported ever using e-cigarettes between 2011 and 2012.  More than half of middle and 80.5% of high school students who report e-cigarette use also report conventional cigarette smoking as well.  While anecdotal evidence appears to support e-cigarettes and their popularity continues to rise, Truth Initiative, formerly the American Legacy Foundation, urges the need for continued scientific study and appropriate legal regulation on the novel product.
