On May 29th The World Health Organization (WHO) asked all countries to ban all forms of tobacco advertising. This includes tobacco promotion and sponsorship. The WHO’s call to action was timed to coincide with World No Tobacco Day (May 31st). WHO estimates that tobacco use kills almost 6 million people annually. Since smoking rates in wealthier countries are descending, WHO officials say that tobacco advertisers are now targeting low income individuals, women, and youth in poorer countries. A global ban on tobacco advertising could potentially save lives worldwide.
