Although the state of Maryland rakes in an estimated $546 million in tobacco-generated revenue each year, and the CDC has recommended that the state spend $63.3 million per year on tobacco prevention programs, Maryland currently allots only $4.3 million per year to tobacco prevention and cessation programs-ranking 34th in the nation for state spending. This is a mere 6.9% of the amount suggested by the CDC, and amounts to less than 1% of the revenue the state receives from tobacco-related sources.
